  9. Are diamonds the rarest of Gemstones?
De Beers maintains a limited supply and keeps demand high with advertising. Rarity is dependent on many factors, including color, carat weight and clarity. Often a Ruby Spinal or favorite of exceptional quality will be rarer than an average diamond. A “D” color flawless diamond is not only the rarest of diamonds; it is also the rarest of all gemstones. Rarity of a gemstone is dependent upon whether the gemstones can be made in a laboratory.

  19. What makes a Gemstone valuable?
Several factors play a role in determining value: beauty, rarity, durability, cut, demand (desirability) and color. If a gem is not beautiful, few people will desire it. One may be drawn by a Gem's beauty, but rarity gives the gem its exclusivity. The gem must be durable enough to endure over the time. The degree of cutting finesse makes the difference between a dull stone and a brilliant Gemstone. Though color preference is very personal, what appear to be subtle color difference to the layperson can be translated into significant monetary differences. The interplay of all these complicated attributes sets the value.

  20. Spinal-Isn't that synthetic?
Spinal can be an incredibly beautiful gemstone, probably because it was one of the first gems synthesized, people don't realize it also occurs naturally. In Great Britain's crown jewels, the black prince's Ruby is really spinal. Before the science of gemology evolved, Spinal was often confused with Ruby.

  21. Why is a one carat diamond not double the price of half carat di
Diamond prices are very unique. They are determined by supply and demand. Although a one carat double the weight of a half carat stone, they are more than twice as difficult to find as the weight increases. That's why they are not priced in a linear way.

  22. How do I find out my ring size?

  24. Are cabochons just cut of cheaper material?
Cabochon is the domed rounded cut most often seen in Opal and Jade. Since the cabochon doesn't have facets that can call attention to inclusions, more included rough material is used in its fashioning. Though the cabochon allows use of the more included material, many fine gems are cut in this style. Some people prefer them. Cabochons are very European, sophisticated and sensuous: rounded, full shape offering a bold dose of color. Its appeal is more of a subtle inner calling than the sparkling screams of a faceted gem.

That's no accident, very careful attention was paid to the angles on the gem's bottom so that when light enters from above it completely turns around and sparkles back to you. 28. Why color a diamond?
Natural color diamonds are so beautiful, but yet so rare and therefore so expensive. With today's technology it is possible to take colorless diamonds and permanently add colors to them.

  29. Which color is best?
What moves one person may not stir another. Nevertheless, there are trade standards for preferred colors which translate into varying prices. Buy the color that speaks to you, but buy from a professional who is familiar with the color stone market, has your interests at heart and can advise you accordingly. Diamonds are graded according to absence of color. Colored gemstones are more complex, and several colors may be present in one gem with varying intensity. What may seem like slight differences in these colors may have a great impact on price.

  30. What is my best protection against misrepresentation and fraud?
Buy in your 'backyard' from someone with whom you have established a relationship and who has your best interest at heart. Ask questions and become informed, but realize that book knowledge doesn't equal trade knowledge. Colored gems are especially complex and not understood by everyone.

  31. What is color enhanced diamonds?
Color enhanced diamonds are natural diamonds that have undergone color procedures resulting in beautiful fancy colors. They actually sell at a fraction of the price of their natural color equivalents. The color of each treated diamond is permanent and stable under normal conditions of wear and care. Color enhanced diamonds can be treated as any other Diamond except when they are processed involving extreme heat (above 300 degrees C or 572 degrees F). When a ring is given for resizing, for example, the client should inform the jeweler that the diamond is color enhanced so that the proper precaution can be taken.

  32. What color of Tanzanite is considered to be the best?
Tanzanites can be violets-Blue, even purple or pure blue depending on how the gem is handled during the cutting stage. Which color is best is a matter of personal preference. Tanzanite is a very passionately colored gem and everyone seems to remember it, once experienced, lot of people are attracted to the violets-blue colors , which for them, heighten the sense of the exotic. True blues seem to be preferred.

  33. I am traveling overseas and I will buy a Gemstone over there.
It's a great idea to go overseas with the fantasy of bringing back a beautiful jewel at a bargain price, it is the Marco Polo syndrome, but think about it: you are buying a commodity about which you know next to nothing, for significant money, from a stranger 5,000 miles from home who comes from a culture with a long tradition of trading. Who has the advantage?. How do you know that you are not buying a synthetic, misrepresented or fraudulently treated gem? You can probably buy at a better price in the states from a reputed jeweler who is offering

  34. With colored gemstone, is darker always better?
Intensity of color is good even if the gemstone is so dark that color and light can no longer be seen in it. Actually, lighter is better, as with Diamonds, colorless is best. Intensity is good upto a point. When a gemstone becomes too dark, it is not as valuable. Also intensity of color is a matter of personal preference.

  35. Where do these stones come from?
Sometimes we can track the origin of the gem with certainty, other times, gems in their rough form are sent to the cutting centers where they are cut and redistributed according to quality, colors and internal characteristics are indicative of certain localities, but one can't be always be certain. Furthermore, most mines are in Africa, Brazil, & Sri Lanka.
